Coastival: (9 – 11 February 2018)
Coastival is a winter festival which takes place in the magnificent seaside town of Scarborough. It is a large-scale multi-arts festival which hosts over 100 events (most of them free) in over 30 venues in 3 days.
Coastival promotes artists of all art forms with a diverse offer ranging from challenging art installations to comedy, film, theatre, dance and music of every genre. We commission new work and large scale outdoor parades, giving hundreds of artists the chance to show their work and giving the public access to the highest cultural output.
Half of our audiences are local people and half are visitors to the area, which means we generate a healthy economic impact for the local tourism industry in the quiet off-season.
Coastival has promoted a diverse range of bands including Feeder, Brand New Heavies, Levellers, Clare Teal, Dennis Rollins, 17 Hippies, Rafiki Jazz, Craig Charles, Boy George, Smoove and Turrell, Nubiyan Twist and the Everley Pregnant Brothers. Also, comedians such as Jon Richardson, Count Arthur Strong, Shappi Khorsandi, John Shuttleworth, and Mundo Jazz . There have also been theatre and dance companies such as Slung Low, Reckless Sleepers, RJC Dance, and Stacy Makishi.
This is in addition to huge, stilt walking dinosaurs, lantern parades, hours of free acoustic music and films, a whole festival for kids – ‘Rollercoastival’, and art installations in and around the town. A large part of our work also includes community participation through workshops and performance, which has helped to establish Coastival as a welcome beacon in the dark of winter for residents on the Yorkshire Coast.
Throughout the rest of the year we contribute to other local events such as Tour de Yorkshire, Seafest, the UK National Pro Surf Championship and P1 powerboats, raising the artistic and cultural content and quality.
